Radio 88.6 is a private radio station that broadcasts in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. It reaches over one million listeners every week. The station plays rock music from various genres and eras. From classic rock to new rock, from hard rock to alternative rock. Radio 88.6 claims to be the only radio station in Austria that plays “real music with real instruments”. It aims to provide a diverse and authentic musical experience for its Listeners.
History:
Radio 88.6 was founded in 1998 as a successor of the former Radio CD International. It was one of the first private radio stations in Austria after the liberalization of the radio market in 19933. The station was initially owned by a consortium of media companies. Including the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), the newspaper publisher Kurier, and the German media group Bertelsmann. In 2004, Radio 88.6 was acquired by the Austrian media entrepreneur Wolfgang Fellner. Wolfgang Fellner also owns several newspapers and magazines, such as Österreich, News, and Woman. In 2007, Radio 88.6 rebranded itself as a rock station. Focusing on playing more guitar-based music and less pop and dance music.
